Why BreedGuessr exists
BreedGuessr is a free learning game for people who want to get better at recognizing dog breeds and understanding where those breeds come from. The goal is not to replace a kennel club standard, veterinarian, trainer, or adoption counselor. It is a playful way to build visual memory, notice breed traits, and connect dog photos with useful context.
Data and image approach
The game uses dog images sourced from the Stanford Dogs dataset, which contains images for 120 breeds. Breed guide pages add short educational summaries about history, temperament, health notes, and fun facts. For Doggo Guessr, the map mode pairs breed names with recorded origin locations so players can test geography as well as identification.
Game modes
Guess the Breed shows a dog photo and asks you to choose the correct breed from four options across 6 rounds. Doggo Guessr gives you the breed and asks you to pin its origin on a world map across 5 rounds. The separate dog quiz mode adds trivia-style questions for players who want facts instead of image or map guessing.
What the game can and cannot tell you
BreedGuessr is useful for practice, but dog identification from photos has limits. Lighting, grooming, age, mixed ancestry, regional breed names, and dataset coverage can all affect what a dog looks like. Origin data can also be simplified: many modern breeds were refined over time by people moving dogs across borders. Treat each answer as a learning prompt, then use the linked breed guides for more context.
