Ibizan Hounds are intelligent, active clowns who love entertaining their families with playful antics. Though independent and stubborn at times, they respond well to positive training methods and make excellent watch dogs with their alert, amber-eyed gaze. These sensitive, sweet-natured hounds are wonderful around children and other dogs, thriving on companionship and daily exercise. However, they're famous escapologists with incredible jumping ability and a strong prey drive, requiring very tall fences and constant supervision off-leash.
The Ibizan Hound originates from the island of Ibiza in Spain, where it was traditionally used for hunting in Catalan-speaking regions and France. DNA analysis indicates the breed was formed relatively recently from other Mediterranean hound types, sharing similar function with the Pharaoh Hound, Cirneco dell'Etna, and Portuguese Podengo. The breed is classified by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale as a primitive type and remains the largest among its Mediterranean hound cousins.
Ibizan Hounds are generally hardy with few hereditary health concerns common to hound breeds. Minor issues include seizures and allergies, with rare occurrences of axonal dystrophy, cataracts, retinal dysplasia, and deafness. They are sensitive to barbiturate anesthesia, so owners should inform veterinarians before any procedures, and CERF and BAER testing is recommended for breeding dogs.
