History

The Miniature Poodle's story is rooted in circus history. Breeders in 19th-century France selectively bred down Standard Poodles in size to create a dog that was easier to transport and handle in traveling circuses. These clever little performers became famous for their remarkable abilities, walking tightropes, performing comedies, and even executing magic tricks. Originally called the 'Toy Poodle' until 1907, the Miniature variety eventually became one of the most beloved companion dogs worldwide. By the mid-20th century, Poodles (including Miniatures) ranked among the most registered breeds with both the AKC and FCI.

Miniature Poodles are generally healthy with a longer life expectancy than larger poodles, often living 12-15 years or more. However, responsible breeding is essential, as irresponsible downsizing historically led to genetic abnormalities and behavioral issues.
