History

Established as a recognized breed by 1860, the Curly-coated Retriever was one of the first two retriever breeds to gain official recognition, alongside the now-extinct Wavy-coated Retriever. Developed in England specifically for upland bird and waterfowl hunting, these dogs were prized by gamekeepers for their exceptional water-resistant coats and retrieving abilities. The breed's distinctive tight curls evolved as a functional adaptation to harsh hunting conditions, protecting them from water, burrs, and damage that softer-coated dogs would suffer.

Health Notes

A 2024 UK study found an average life expectancy of 12.2 years, slightly below the purebred average of 12.7 years. As with many sporting breeds, they are susceptible to hip dysplasia and eye conditions. Regular health screenings and responsible breeding practices are important for maintaining the breed's well-being.
